3 stunning Photo Spots at the Green Lake in Styria, Austria
If you ask me how paradise looks like, I’d say the green lake in Styria is pretty close. Here, nature is still intact and you can enjoy a beautiful micro cosmos of fauna and flora. The lake and the surround area are a nature conservancy. No swimming. No littering. No camping.
The green lake is two hours by car from Vienna and one hour from Graz. Here’s my personal advice: Be there early! There’s only one parking lot (with a fee) and it fills quickly, especially on weekends in spring and summer.
The lake is famous for two things: First, and I assume you can guess it, is because of the crystal clear water coming from the surrounding mountains when the snow melts in spring. Second is because of the water line depending on the season. While the lake fills up several feet during spring, it almost drains during late summer and spring.
The lake itself is not big. You can go round it in less than an hour unless you extend your walk to two more lakes right near the green lake.
So after you’ve parked your car, head towards the lake and keep right once you reach the trail fork. This trail will take you round the green lake and the two other lakes counter clockwise. Most people I saw took the left path which will take you on a trail that goes between the three lakes. You’ll miss the other two lakes if you take he left trail.
Photo Spots at the green lake
You’ll see hundreds of beautiful photo spots on your hike. Here are my three favorite ones.
The first one is right at the beginning of the lake. The water is very shallow there and you’ll see the mountains behind the lake. A perfect spot for a reflection shot.
Continue until you see a small rocky island with a bench on it in the lake. The bench is a great place to relax and enjoy the stunning nature in late summer. In early spring you’d need a scuba diving equipment if you want to take a rest on the bench because the it will be several feet below the surface of the water.
Continue until you reach the other side of the lake and enjoy a view over the lake with the highest mountain in the background.
