iPhone Photography Gear I use

One of the main reasons I turned to iPhone photography was because I love to travel light. That means I got rid of all of the cameras (1 DSLR + 1 point and shoot), heavy lenses (2), multiple batteries (up to 6 for DSLR and point and shoot), ND filters (3), big gorillapod (1) and heavy (because sturdy) tripod (1). With iPhone photography, all of the gear (except for the one travel tripod) fits into the pockets of my jacket.

iPhone tripod mounts and iPhone tripods

The iPhone does not come with a built in tripod mount. That would be difficult given the thin profile of the iPhone. So you have to buy yourself a tripod mount. I'm a fan of the Joby iPhone tripod mounts, especially since they release the new Griptight One mount! As for the tripods, I heavily use the (also new) Gorillapod magnetic which now comes with a ballhead (makes things so much easier!). And finally, I use the AmazonBasics Travel tripod. It's light and folds so it fits in all of my backpacks.

Joby Griptight One Mount

The Joby Griptight One mount is the successor to the standard grip tight mount that came in two sizes for normal and plus sized phones. The new one fits both!

Job Griptight Pro Mount

I use this version of the Griptight mount when I need to have my iPhone permanently mounted to a tripod like when I scramble around in abandoned places with limited light.

iPhone Lenses

New Moment Wide Lens

I've backed the original Moment Wide Angle Lens back then on Kickstarter and though I've tried other iPhone lenses, I always returned to the Moment lenses. This is the new Moment Wide angle lens.

Power Banks

I don't know about you, but I never get through a day with a single battery charge on my iPhone. When I'm shooting, especially in bright sunlight with the screen brightness at max, the iPhone battery drains quite quickly. So I always carry a power bank. My recent and new favourite is the Anker PowerCore II Slim (note the word "slim" - it's barely thicker than my iPhone 7 plus) for everyday use and the 26800 mAh beast for traveling.

Anker PowerCore II Slim 10000 mAh Power Bank

This is my every day carry power bank. It's small and slim and provides a few charges to my iPhone 7 plus. Perfect for a day of hiking or just hanging out with friends.

Cables

I hate cables; especially if they're long and I need to avoid cable clutter. So I looked for solution using short but sturdy cables that would allow me to charge devices from Apple, my Kindle and the two power banks I use with a minimal number of cables.

EasyAcc short USB-to-Micro-USB charging cables

I hate cables; especially if they're long and I hate untangling them. So I bought 4 of those short and flexible EasyAcc USB-to-Micro-USB cables in combination with Homespot Micro-USB-to-Lightning adapters to charge all my devices (iPhone, iPad, Kindle and power banks) during a trip. No more untangling cables!

Homespot Micro-USB-to-Lightning Adapter

I need to charge two different kinds of devices during a trip. First, all the i-devices and second my Amazon Kindle Fire and the two Anker power banks. So instead of carrying half a dozen of charging cables, I built myself a 2-in-1 charging solution using the cables from EasyAcc with one of those adapters added to each of them.

Backing up my iPhone photos in the field

I probably should put those two a little higher in the list. Before you think about tripods, lenses, power banks and so on, do invest some time and money to think of a backup strategy for your iPhone photos when you're on the road. Though many hotels have Wifi, I learned that it's not always fast enough to upload your photos to iCloud or via VPN to your NAS at home. So I use those two small and portable USB sticks to backup my iPhone photos on the go - each day!

Sandisk iXpand 128 GB iPhone USB Stick

This small and versatile USB Stick plugs into your iPhone via the lightning port and to your notebook via USB once you're back home. It allows you to copy over your precious travel memories using a free app. Worth the investment!

Sandisk Connect Wirless 128GB USB Stick

If you prefer a wireless backup, then this is the stick for you. Just power it on and copy over all your masterpieces. Supports Wifi sharing, so you can connect the stick itself to the hotel Wifi, copy and surf the web at the same time.
