I’ve stopped taking and carrying a heavy DSLR with lenses on a vacation. I prefer to use either a compact camera or more and more often, the iPhone.

I took this photo of Torre Agbar with a Panasonic Lumix TZ-31. For good quality long time exposures at night, a compact camera should allow to limit the max. ISO to e.g. 100 to avoid noise and offer an aperture priority shooting mode.

Additionally you should put the camera on a tripod to avoid blurry photos as you will get a rather long exposure time. I took this photo with 1/5 of a second. I use a Gorillapod [Amazon Link] because you can “transform” pretty much everything around into a camera stand. Finally I recommend to use the self timer to avoid camera shake when pressing the shutter release.
